Marine Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting

A breaker that keeps tripping. A generator that won't share load. A drive that faults at sea. We trace the cause, fix it and prove the system is back.

Troubleshooting

Finding the cause, not just the symptom

Electrical faults on a vessel rarely announce their cause. A breaker that trips, a generator that will not take load, a drive that faults under certain conditions or an alarm that comes and goes can each have several causes, in several places. We work through them methodically: what the system is doing, what it should be doing, and where the two part.

Once the cause is found, we repair it, test it and record what was done — so the next person on board knows what happened and why. When a repair shows that the system itself has reached the end of its life, we say so, and scope it as a retrofit.

Scope

What we troubleshoot and repair

Faults across the electrical plant, from generation to the consumer.

  • Fault diagnosis

Measurement-based fault finding that narrows a symptom down to its cause before parts are changed.

  • Electrical failures

Loss of supply, earth faults, insulation failures and overheating, traced to their source.

  • Switchboards

Breakers, protection relays, busbars and switchboard control circuits.

  • Generators

Generator protection and control faults, and problems with load sharing and parallel running.

  • Motors

Motors that will not start, that trip, overheat or run rough.

  • Drives

Variable frequency drive faults, parameter problems and drive-to-motor issues.

  • Controls and automation

Faults in control circuits and automation, and the signals between them and the plant.

  • Power distribution

Distribution boards, feeders and consumers that lose supply or trip.

  • Cabling

Damaged, degraded or badly terminated cables found and replaced.

  • Onboard troubleshooting

Attendance on board — alongside or during operation — when the fault has to be found where it happens.

Where

Where we attend

Faults happen wherever the vessel is. We plan the attendance around her schedule.

  • On board, alongside in port
  • On board, during operation
  • In a shipyard or during a docking
  • Offshore
How it runs

From the report to a proven repair

Most of the time saved in troubleshooting is saved before anyone boards.

  1. 01

    Report

    Symptoms and history

Alarm and event logs, the symptoms, recent changes and the drawings are gathered before attending.

  2. 02

    Diagnose

    Fault finding on site

Measurements and tests on board narrow the fault down to its cause.

  3. 03

    Repair

    Repair, test and record

The fault is repaired, the system is tested back into service, and the work is recorded.

FAQ

Questions about electrical repair

How quickly can you attend a vessel?
It depends on where the vessel is and when. We tell you honestly when we can be on board, and plan the visit around the vessel's port call where we can.
What should we send before you attend?
Alarm and event logs, a description of the symptoms and when they occur, any recent changes or repairs, and the relevant drawings. The more we know before boarding, the less time is spent finding the fault.
Do you repair generators and motors?
We find and fix the electrical faults on generators and motors on board — protection, control, connections and load sharing. Where a machine needs a workshop rewind or a mechanical overhaul, we tell you.
What if the repair shows the system needs replacing?
Then we tell you, and scope the replacement as a retrofit.

Electrical fault on board?

Tell us the vessel, where she is and what is happening. We'll tell you how fast we can help and what we need from you.
